Avalara Sales Integration (via EFS Networks)

What this integration does
Sales tax usually starts out simple.
A manufacturer sells mostly within one state. The ERP stores a tax rate table. Orders and invoices apply the correct percentage automatically.
The complexity appears once shipments begin crossing state lines.
Different jurisdictions apply different rates. Certain products are taxable in one location and exempt in another. Economic nexus laws expand the number of states where tax must be collected and reported.
At that point the ERP is not just calculating tax. Someone has to maintain the rules behind the calculation.
That maintenance shows up in predictable places. Accounting updates rate tables when jurisdictions change them. Invoices occasionally require adjustment. Month-end reporting includes verification that the correct rules were applied.
The Avalara integration removes that maintenance from the ERP.
How the Integration Works
Avalara maintains current tax rules for jurisdictions across the United States. The integration allows Cetec ERP transactions to reference that rule set during order and invoice creation.
When a sales order or invoice is created in Cetec ERP:
- Customer and ship-to information are sent to Avalara
- Avalara evaluates the applicable jurisdiction rules
- The calculated tax amount is returned to the transaction
Cetec ERP records the returned value directly on the invoice.
From an accounting standpoint, the invoice reflects exactly what was calculated. There is no separate tax calculation step and no duplicate entry.
Operational Impact
Less tax table maintenance
Internal rate tables no longer require frequent updates as jurisdictions change rates.
More consistent invoices
Transactions use the same jurisdiction logic for every calculation.
Cleaner month-end reporting
Tax reporting becomes verification rather than reconciliation.
Prepared for multi-state growth
If the company establishes nexus in additional states, the calculation framework is already in place.
When This Integration Makes Sense
Manufacturers typically look at this integration when:
- Orders ship regularly into multiple states
- Internal tax tables require ongoing maintenance
- Accounting spends time correcting tax calculations
- Month-end tax reporting requires manual review
At that stage, the problem is not calculating tax. The problem is maintaining the rules required to calculate it correctly.
The Avalara integration removes that administrative layer while keeping the existing workflow inside Cetec ERP.
